2026 Budget Guide for Southern Italy

Southern Italy, Naples and Amalfi Coast price gap

Naples vs Amalfi Coast

This article was adapted from original ideas published on Visit Naples and Amalfi coast Travel tips.

People often assume “southern Italy” has one set of prices. It doesn’t. On a map Naples and the Amalfi Coast are near. When it comes to spending, they tell two separate stories.

Naples moves like a working city. The Amalfi Coast feels more like a stage set. Once you notice it, it all clicks. Suddenly, your daily expenses make sense—and maybe a little shock.

Coffee: Morning Fuel

Coffee shows it best. In Naples, you go in, drink at the counter and leave. It is quick, easy and cheap, often just a euro unless you are in a tourist area.

On the Amalfi Coast, sit down anywhere with a view, and the same espresso feels… expensive. It hasn’t changed. Just everything around it—the chair, the table, the time you linger—has. And, yes, the bill too.

I’ve noticed that even a tiny change in seating can double the cost.

Typical prices: Naples around €1.20–€1.50; Amalfi Coast: €3.00–€5.00 if you sit

Pizza and Gelato: Value Differences

Pizza in Naples is simple. Margherita. Six or seven euros. No fuss. Quick bite.

Along the coast, pizza becomes dinner. Price jumps. You’re paying for location, pace, the little bit of theatre.

Gelato is smaller but sneaky. In Naples, it’s flavour and portion. On the coast, your surroundings matter as much as the scoop. Sometimes worth it. Sometimes shrug and move on.

Margherita: Naples €6–€8.50; Amalfi Coast €12–€18+
Gelato (two scoops/medium cone): Naples €3.50–€4.50; Amalfi Coast €5–€8

Meals After Sunset

Evening meals show the gap most. Naples lets you relax. Pasta, seafood and no sums in your head.

The Amalfi Coast? Prices climb fast. Especially in towns with few tables. Quality can be brilliant everywhere, but context shapes cost.

Aperitivo shows the contrast. Naples: social pause. Coast: moment to linger and pay for it. Same glass. Different expectation.

Dinner (pasta/seafood): Naples €12–€18; Amalfi Coast €22–€40+
Aperol Spritz: Naples €5–€7 (snacks sometimes included); Amalfi Coast €12–€20+

Stretching Your Euro

You don’t have to scrimp. You just need to notice. Coffee at the counter isn’t a trick. It’s normal. Sitting down? Choice. Pay for it.

Coperto? Bread and table service. Nothing sneaky. Transport: taxis are expensive along the coast and sometimes impossible to flag.

Buses and ferries are slower but generally reliable once roads clog and timetables drift.

Small bottle of water: Naples €1–€1.50; Amalfi Coast €2.50–€4

Quick Money-Saving Habits

“Banco” rule: Stand at the counter. Sit, and the price jumps. Coperto: €2–€5 for bread/table service. Normal, not a scam. Transport: Buses €2–€4. Ferries €15–€25 one way. Much cheaper than taxis.

Wander Naples, Plan the Coast

Naples lets you wander. The Amalfi Coast rewards planning. Spend thoughtlessly, and your wallet complains. Spend with awareness, and you enjoy little surprises along the way.
