Practical Italy Travel Advice From A Local Perspective
This article was adapted from original ideas published on Visit Naples and Amalfi coast Travel tips.
Drive a Scooter Through a Major City Without Experience
It may look effortless in films, but riding a scooter through cities such as Rome or Naples requires confidence and local knowledge. Traffic moves quickly, road layouts can be complex, and restricted traffic zones (ZTLs) are common. For most visitors, walking and public transport are a far more enjoyable way to explore.
Spend a Day Out Without Carrying Some Cash
Card payments are widely accepted across Italy, but cash still proves useful in many everyday situations. A quick espresso at a neighbourhood bar, a purchase from a market stall, or a small gratuity can be easier with coins and small notes. I always keep a few euros in my wallet.
Turn Up for Dinner at 6pm
Italy operates on a later dining schedule than many visitors expect. Traditional restaurants often do not begin dinner service until 7.30pm or later, particularly in smaller towns and cities. If I find myself hungry earlier, I would rather enjoy an aperitivo and wait for the kitchen to open.
Confuse the Coperto With a Tip
Many visitors assume the coperto listed on a restaurant bill is a gratuity for staff. It is not. The charge covers elements such as table service, bread and place settings, depending on the restaurant. While tipping is not expected in the same way as it is in some countries, a few extra euros for attentive service is always appreciated.
Leave Bread Shopping Until Late Afternoon
Many traditional bakeries bake their bread early in the morning, and the most popular loaves often sell out before lunchtime. While you can still find bread later in the day, I prefer to visit a bakery earlier for the best selection.
Assume I Can Get a Table Without a Reservation
Italy’s most popular restaurants are often small and busy, particularly from Thursday through to Sunday. Booking ahead gives you access to the restaurants locals love and removes the uncertainty of searching for a table at the last minute.
Explore Historic Centres in Flip-Flops
Historic Italian cities are beautiful, but they were not designed with modern footwear in mind. Cobblestones, steep streets and uneven paving can quickly become uncomfortable. A good pair of walking shoes makes a significant difference after several hours of sightseeing.
Forget to Validate a Paper Transport Ticket
On regional trains and some local transport services, purchasing a ticket is only part of the process. Physical tickets often need to be validated before travel. Inspectors regularly check tickets, and travellers without a properly validated ticket may receive a fine. Whenever I use a paper ticket, I always check whether validation is required before boarding.
