Planning a Trip to Ischia Read This First

If you’re planning a trip to Ischia, let me share something I see every year. Travellers arrive excited to explore this beautiful volcanic island, but many end up making the same expensive mistakes. Most of these are easy to avoid, and knowing a few local tips before you arrive can save you both time and money.
Before you board your ferry, here are my 13 golden rules for making the most of your visit.
1. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Book Your Ferry
One of the biggest mistakes I see is travellers arriving at the port in Naples or Pozzuoli expecting to buy tickets for the next ferry.
From May through September, especially on weekends, ferries and hydrofoils often sell out. Waiting until the last minute usually means standing in long lines and wasting valuable holiday time. Even worse, many visitors only buy a one-way ticket and later struggle to find availability for the return journey.
I always recommend booking both your outbound and return tickets before your trip.

2. Don’t Treat Ischia as a Quick Day Trip
Many visitors assume Ischia is similar in size to Capri or Procida. It isn’t.
Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples and offers far more than beaches. There are six unique towns, thermal parks, volcanic landscapes, hiking trails, historic villages, and incredible restaurants.
Trying to fit everything into just a few hours usually means you’ll only experience the busy harbour area.
If you really want to appreciate the island, I recommend staying at least three or four days. That gives you enough time to slow down and enjoy each part of Ischia properly.
3. Don’t Stay Only in Ischia Porto
The harbour is convenient when you arrive, but it is only one small part of the island.
I always encourage visitors to explore beyond the port.
Spend an evening in Forio for spectacular sunsets and beautiful botanical gardens. Visit Sant’Angelo, an elegant fishing village where cars are not allowed. Discover Lacco Ameno, known for luxury resorts and the famous Fungo rock.
Each town has its own atmosphere, and that’s what makes Ischia so special.
4. Don’t Depend Completely on the Bus Schedule
The local buses are inexpensive and travel all around the island, but they aren’t always predictable.
During the summer they can be delayed, overcrowded, or already full when they reach your stop. If you have a restaurant reservation or need to catch your ferry, always leave yourself extra time.
Starting your day early and having a backup transport plan can save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
5. Think Twice Before Renting a Car
Driving around Ischia is not as easy as many visitors expect.
The roads are narrow and winding, while local drivers and buses move confidently through streets that can feel intimidating if you’re unfamiliar with Southern Italy.
Unless you’re already comfortable driving in these conditions, I suggest avoiding a rental car. A scooter is a better option if you’re an experienced rider. Otherwise, taxis and organised transfers are usually the most relaxing way to get around.
6. Visit the Aragonese Castle Later in the Day
The Aragonese Castle is one of Ischia’s most famous landmarks, and it deserves a place on every itinerary.
While it’s beautiful throughout the day, I believe the best time to visit is in the late afternoon. The temperatures are cooler, the crowds begin to disappear, and the golden light over the sea creates unforgettable views.
Watching the sunset from the castle is one of my favourite experiences on the island.
7. Don’t Leave Without Trying Coniglio all’Ischitana
Many visitors come to Ischia expecting seafood to be the island’s signature dish. While the seafood is excellent, the traditional speciality is actually rabbit.
Coniglio all’Ischitana is slowly cooked with tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and white wine, creating one of the island’s most authentic recipes.
One of my favourite places to enjoy it is Le Stufe Osteria & Cucina.

If you’re planning to order the rabbit, make sure you call at least one day in advance because it must be prepared ahead of time.
8. Don’t Skip the Natural Hot Springs
Ischia is famous for thermal parks such as Poseidon and Negombo, and they are both wonderful experiences.
However, many visitors never discover that the island also offers natural thermal springs completely free of charge.
One place I always recommend is Baia di Sorgeto. Here, hot volcanic water rises naturally from the seabed and mixes with the Mediterranean Sea, creating natural thermal pools surrounded by dramatic cliffs.
It’s one of the most unique experiences you can have on the island without spending a euro.
9. Don’t Pack Only Beach Clothes
Although Ischia is an island, there is much more to do than spend time on the beach.
Many visitors hike Mount Epomeo, explore charming villages, and enjoy elegant dinners in places like Sant’Angelo.
Pack comfortable walking shoes for hiking and exploring cobblestone streets, along with a few smart casual outfits for evenings out.
10. Bring Water Shoes
Some of Ischia’s most beautiful swimming spots are rocky rather than sandy.
Without water shoes, entering the sea can be uncomfortable and slippery. A simple pair of water shoes makes visiting hidden coves and thermal beaches much safer and far more enjoyable.
11. Don’t Miss Ischia’s Local Specialties
There are two local foods I always encourage visitors to try.
The first is La Zingara, Ischia’s famous toasted sandwich filled with prosciutto, melted mozzarella, and fresh local ingredients.
My favourite place to enjoy it is Bar Gino.
Address
Via Dottore Tommaso Morgera
80074 Casamicciola Terme NA
For breakfast, treat yourself to a Cornetto Ischitano. Unlike a traditional Italian cornetto, this pastry combines flaky puff pastry with soft brioche dough, creating something completely unique.
The place I recommend is Gran Bar Giardino Calise.
Address
Via Antonio Sogliuzzo, 69
80077 Ischia NA
Before finishing your evening, order a glass of Rucolino after dinner. This traditional Ischian liqueur is made from wild arugula grown on the island and has a sweet, slightly bitter flavour that makes the perfect digestif.
12. Experience Giardino Eden
Many visitors spend all their time on public beaches and miss one of Ischia’s most beautiful waterfront locations.
Giardino Eden is my favourite beach club, restaurant, and resort on the island. It overlooks Cartaromana Bay and offers spectacular views of the Aragonese Castle rising from the sea.
Address
Via Nuova Cartaromana, 62
80077 Ischia NA
If Giardino Eden happens to be fully booked, my second recommendation is Cocò Mare, located just next door.
It shares the same beautiful bay and incredible scenery.
Address
Via Nuova Cartaromana, Ingresso Torre di Michelangelo, 58
80077 Ischia NA
13. Skip the Large Group Boat Tours
Large group boat tours are often crowded, noisy, and expensive.
Instead, I recommend renting a small private boat whenever possible. In Italy, boats with engines under 40 horsepower do not require a boating license, making this an affordable and enjoyable way to explore the coastline.
Having your own boat allows you to discover hidden coves, swim in crystal-clear water, and explore sea caves at your own pace.
Looking for the Perfect Boat Tour
If you’d rather leave everything to someone else, I also organise private boat tours around Ischia, Capri, and Procida.
Each tour includes a professional skipper, drinks and snacks on board, snorkeling equipment, and the flexibility to create a personalised itinerary. They’re perfect for couples, families, and groups of friends looking for a more exclusive experience.
