Dreams, Determination, and the Timeless Beauty of Venice

Some dreams take root quietly. They begin with childhood notebooks, hopeful manuscripts slipped into the post, or a few encouraging words that stay with us far longer than we expect. Talking with Lynn Shelby reminded me that writing often grows this way, gathering strength over many years before finally finding its moment. Her latest novel, Venice Summer, reflects that same quiet perseverance, weaving together romance, art, history, and one of Italy’s most enchanting cities into a story that lingers long after the final page.

Lynn writes contemporary women’s fiction and romance, creating stories where people rediscover themselves as readily as they fall in love. Beautiful settings have always been part of her novels, yet after spending time talking with her, it became clear that place means much more than scenery. Whether she is writing about Venice or another European destination, every location carries memories, emotions, and opportunities for her characters to begin again.

A Writer Long Before Publication

Listening to Lynn speak, I found myself returning to one particular story from her childhood. She told me she couldn’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing. As a schoolgirl, she filled little green exercise books with stories, already imagining worlds beyond the classroom. At fourteen, she gathered enough courage to send a manuscript to Puffin Books, hoping someone might see something special in her work.

The novel never reached publication, but something equally valuable arrived instead. An editor wrote back with a thoughtful letter encouraging her to keep writing. Decades later, Lynn still remembers that kindness with genuine affection. “I’m very glad I took her advice,” she said, and hearing those words reminded me how powerful encouragement can be. Sometimes a few thoughtful sentences become part of someone’s future without the writer ever knowing it.

The Phone Call Every Writer Dreams Of

Years later, another moment quietly changed everything.

While browsing online, Lynn discovered a writing competition organised by Woman magazine and Accent Press. She submitted the opening chapters of French Kissing, then returned to everyday life without expecting too much. Like so many aspiring authors, she knew competitions attracted thousands of entries, and she preferred not to spend months imagining success before there was any reason to celebrate.

That celebration came unexpectedly one day in January.

An editor from Accent Press called to tell her she had won.

“I absolutely screeched down the phone,” Lynn laughed.

The excitement quickly gave way to another realisation. She was home alone. Her husband was at work, her children were out, and all she could do was wait until everyone returned home. By then, she was dancing around the house, eager to share the news that had changed her life. It is impossible not to smile imagining that moment, because every writer hopes that one day the phone might ring with news like that.

Finding Confidence in the Story

Winning the competition led naturally to publication, although the editing process also brought valuable conversations. One suggestion was to make the heroine of French Kissing older. Lynn politely explained why she believed the character’s age mattered, describing how her decisions felt authentic for someone in her twenties. The publisher agreed, allowing the story to remain true to the character she had originally imagined.

That exchange revealed something I admired throughout our conversation. Lynn welcomes collaboration, yet she also understands her characters deeply enough to know when something would alter their emotional truth. There is a quiet confidence in that approach. She listens carefully, reflects thoughtfully, and remains faithful to the story she wants to tell.

Building a Career One Story at a Time

Success did not happen in isolation. Long before publication, Lynn joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association, whose New Writers’ Scheme offered detailed critiques of aspiring authors’ manuscripts. Both French Kissing and The One That I Want benefited from that guidance, and Lynn still speaks warmly about the advice she received. She readily recommends the organisation to writers hoping to improve their craft, describing the feedback as invaluable.

Family support also played an important role. After being made redundant, Lynn decided to dedicate a year to writing while her husband kept the household running. She promised herself that if nothing happened after twelve months, she would return to work. Eleven months later, the winning phone call arrived. Looking back, it feels like one of those moments where determination quietly meets opportunity, rewarding years of persistence that nobody else had seen.

Traditional Publishing and New Possibilities

Lynn’s career eventually led her through both traditional and independent publishing, giving her a rare perspective on each path. After several novels with Accent Press, later acquired by Headline, one manuscript no longer suited the publisher’s list. Rather than leaving it tucked away in a drawer, she began exploring independent publishing and discovered a whole new creative challenge.

She spoke enthusiastically about learning everything from formatting and typography to online retailers and cover design. Rather than seeing the technical side as a burden, she approached it with curiosity. There are, she explained, many excellent resources available for authors willing to learn. Listening to her, I was struck by how naturally she embraced each new stage of her career. Traditional publishing and independent publishing both offered valuable experiences, each allowing different parts of her creativity to flourish.

Falling for Venice

Conversation soon turned to Venice Summer, and it quickly became obvious why this city captured Lynn’s imagination.

She first visited Venice while celebrating a milestone birthday, arriving by boat from the airport. Even now, she remembers watching the city emerge between the sea and the sky, shimmering almost as though it were floating. That first glimpse stayed with her long after she returned home, quietly planting the seed for a future novel.

“I just fell in love with the place,” she told me.

As someone who spends so much time reading novels set in Italy, I completely understood what she meant. Venice possesses a rhythm unlike anywhere else. Every canal, narrow calle and historic palazzo seems to invite another story, making it easy to imagine characters discovering new beginnings around each corner.

A Story Hidden Beneath the Surface

Venice Summer introduces readers to Rose, an art conservator who arrives in Venice hoping for a fresh start after heartbreak. Her work restoring paintings inside a magnificent palazzo soon brings her into the orbit of its owner, Luca, whose aristocratic confidence creates plenty of sparks before friendship slowly begins to grow.

What fascinated me most, however, was the novel’s structure. As Rose carefully uncovers centuries of paint and varnish, another story gradually reveals itself beneath the surface. Readers move effortlessly between present-day Venice and the Renaissance, following Marietta’s life as the mystery surrounding the painting slowly unfolds. Art restoration becomes the thread connecting two love stories separated by hundreds of years, allowing history and romance to enrich one another in beautifully unexpected ways.

During our conversation, Lynn explained that her love of art history made this structure feel entirely natural. She studied the subject at university and has always been drawn towards galleries whenever she travels. The fictional artist at the heart of the novel may have come from her imagination, yet his world feels convincingly rooted in Renaissance Venice, inspired by the artists, architecture and cultural history that continue to shape the city today.

Writing a Place Readers Can Feel

One aspect of Venice Summer that stayed with me long after reading was Lynn’s descriptive writing. The opening scenes aboard the vaporetto, with grand palazzi glowing in terracotta, ochre and soft pink beside the water, immediately transport readers into Venice. Later chapters shift effortlessly into the sixteenth century, where the language subtly changes to reflect another era without ever interrupting the flow of the story.

Creating that balance requires careful observation, and it became clear while speaking with Lynn that much of her inspiration comes from simply paying attention. Whether she is exploring museums, walking through historic streets or reading about Italian history, every experience quietly finds its way into her fiction. The result feels immersive because each detail serves both the setting and the people living within it.

Final Reflections

Spending time with Lynn Shelby reminded me that every writer carries a story behind the stories they publish. Hers begins with childhood notebooks, an encouraging editor who believed in a young writer’s potential, and the determination to keep writing until opportunity finally arrived. Along the way came supportive family, thoughtful mentors, publishing successes and new creative adventures, each becoming another chapter in a career built patiently over time.

Venice Summer reflects those same qualities. It offers romance, beautiful Italian scenery, fascinating art history and memorable characters, while quietly celebrating resilience, curiosity and the courage to begin again. Long after the final page, Venice continues to shimmer in the imagination, inviting readers to wander its canals once more and discover another story waiting around the next corner.
