Italy has inspired countless stories, and it is easy to understand why. From peaceful lakeside retreats to the warmth and colour of Sicily, its landscapes have a remarkable way of reflecting the emotional journeys of the people who visit them.

Nancy Barone’s latest novel, Postcards from Sicily, released in July 2026, explores family relationships, self-discovery and second chances in a story that unfolds between the tranquil shores of Lake Maggiore and the vibrant beauty of Sicily.

I was delighted to join the book blog tour for this latest release and found myself drawn to its thoughtful exploration of forgiveness, healing and the ties that connect families across generations.

A Story Rooted in Family

At the centre of the novel is Olivia, a woman in her thirties whose life has quietly drifted away from the future she once imagined. Her marriage has lost its spark, her teenage daughter feels increasingly distant and the unresolved pain of her mother’s departure many years earlier continues to shape her life.

When her estranged mother, Susan, invites her to spend eight weeks at an elegant wellness retreat overlooking Lake Maggiore, Olivia reluctantly agrees. The invitation offers the chance to step away from everyday pressures, although one unexpected detail changes everything. Susan will be staying in the room next door.

From the opening chapters, Nancy Barone draws readers into a relationship shaped by years of misunderstanding, unanswered questions and emotional distance. As the story unfolds, each conversation reveals another layer of their shared history, encouraging the reader to keep turning the pages.

Italy as a Place of Renewal

One of the greatest pleasures of this novel is the way Italy becomes part of the story itself.

The Villa Dei Respiri, an elegant nineteenth-century Art Nouveau villa overlooking Lake Maggiore, provides a peaceful setting where Olivia begins confronting emotions she has carried for years. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, lake views and wellness therapies, she gradually discovers the value of slowing down and giving herself permission to heal.

Later, the story moves south to Sicily, where another chapter begins. Nancy’s descriptions capture the island’s warmth, colour and unmistakable character, allowing readers to experience its landscapes through Olivia’s eyes. Sicily becomes far more than a destination. It represents family, reconciliation and the possibility of beginning again.

Characters That Feel Familiar

What makes Postcards from Sicily particularly engaging is the emotional honesty of its characters.

Olivia is far from perfect, and that is precisely what makes her relatable. She is overwhelmed, uncertain and trying to balance the demands of work, marriage and motherhood while carrying unresolved pain from the past. Nancy Barone allows readers to witness both her struggles and her gradual transformation with compassion and authenticity.

The novel also explores the complexities of motherhood from different perspectives. Instead of offering simple answers, it invites readers to consider how forgiveness, empathy and honest conversations can reshape relationships that once seemed beyond repair.

A Story Told with Warmth and Compassion

Although the novel touches on challenging themes, including family estrangement, anxiety and emotional exhaustion, the story never feels heavy. Moments of humour, warmth and gentle self-awareness create a balance that keeps the narrative engaging throughout.

The first-person narration draws readers closely into Olivia’s thoughts, making her journey feel immediate and deeply personal. As she begins to understand both herself and her mother, the emotional depth of the story grows naturally.

By the final chapters, the novel offers something every satisfying story should leave behind, a genuine sense of resolution. Rather than providing perfect answers, it reminds us that healing often begins when we choose understanding over resentment.

Why I Recommend This Book

Postcards from Sicily explores themes that many readers will recognise. Family relationships, forgiveness, personal growth and fresh beginnings are woven into a story that feels both heartfelt and hopeful.

Nancy Barone has created characters who stay with you long after the final page, while the beautiful settings of Lake Maggiore and Sicily add richness to every chapter. Readers who enjoy women’s fiction set in Italy, where memorable landscapes are matched by emotionally engaging stories, will find plenty to enjoy here.

This is a novel that celebrates the courage to move forward while appreciating the places and people who help us find our way.
