Enter Pompeii Without the Wait
This article was adapted from original ideas published on Visit Naples and Amalfi coast Travel tips.
Living near Pompeii, I’ve guided hundreds—if not thousands—of travellers through one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world. The ruins of Pompeii offer an experience that stays with you forever. This ancient Roman city, frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, continues to fascinate and move everyone who walks its streets.
On busy days, particularly in summer or at weekends, getting in can test your patience. Pompeii attracts over four million visitors a year, and during peak periods, queues at the ticket office can stretch well beyond what most expect.
Fortunately know exactly how to help you avoid that.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, here are the tips I always share with my guests to make the most of their time at Pompeii—without spending it standing in line.
1. Buy Your Tickets Online Before You Arrive
The most straightforward way to avoid queues is to purchase your tickets in advance. Use the official ticketing website: www.ticketone.it. Once you’ve booked, they’ll send you a PDF ticket via email, which you can either print or show on your mobile device at the turnstiles—straight in, no need for the ticket office.
You’ll find two main ticket options:
- Pompeii Express – €18
This covers entry to the core ancient city and the Antiquarium, but does not include suburban villas like Villa dei Misteri and Villa Diomede. - Pompeii Plus – €22
This ticket gives you full access to everything: the ancient city, Villa dei Misteri, Villa Diomede, and Villa Regina in Boscoreale. It also includes a shuttle bus to Boscoreale.
Reduced tickets are available for €2 (for EU residents aged 18–25), and entry is free for under-18s. However, if you’re eligible for free entry under specific categories (such as disabled visitors, teachers, etc.), you’ll need to collect your ticket in person from the ticket office, bringing ID or relevant documentation.
Remember: Ticketone is the only official site for buying tickets online for the archaeological park.
2. Time Your Visit Carefully
Even with a ticket in hand, timing plays a huge role in how enjoyable your visit will be. As someone who’s walked these ancient streets more times than I can count, I always suggest arriving either first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon.
- Early Morning (from 9:00 AM)
Tourist groups usually arrive later, so coming in right at opening gives you space and quiet. In summer, you’ll also avoid the worst of the midday heat. - Late Afternoon (after 3:30 PM)
This is when most visitors have finished and the crowds begin to thin. You’ll find fewer queues, gentler sunlight, and a more peaceful Pompeii. Since November, a daily cap has been in place—15,000 visitors in the morning and 5,000 in the afternoon—which means afternoons are significantly less congested.
Planning your visit during these quieter hours lets you explore at your own pace. You won’t have to queue at the entrances to homes and buildings within the ruins, and you’ll have a more immersive experience.
3. Book a Private Tour Guide
Pompeii holds endless stories, and they’re not always easy to uncover on your own. Booking a local guide turns a walk through ruins into a journey through time. I’ve guided families, solo travellers, scholars—you name it—and every one of them has left with a deeper understanding of this incredible city.
Guides can also help manage your time wisely, steering you away from the crowds, showing you hidden gems, and offering insight that guidebooks simply don’t provide. And when you’re not jostling through noisy groups, it’s far easier to listen, take photos, and enjoy the site fully.
