“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.”
E. L. Doctorow
Every time I return to Abruzzo, I am reminded why this region continues to inspire me. The peaceful villages, mountain landscapes and slower pace of life have a wonderful way of quietening the mind, making space for fresh ideas to emerge. It was here that I realised I wanted to bring writers together and create a retreat devoted to storytelling.
My love of Italy has always gone hand in hand with my love of books. With a background in event planning, I began imagining a place where aspiring writers, published authors and anyone with a story waiting to be told could spend time writing, learning and sharing ideas in a welcoming environment.
Like many plans, the retreat paused during the pandemic. The vision remained, and when travel resumed, I was delighted to welcome the first group of writers to experience everything I had hoped it would become.

A Place Where Creativity Can Flourish
Choosing the right setting was one of the most important decisions. Abruzzo has long held a special place in my heart, and I knew its natural beauty and quiet charm would offer the perfect backdrop for a creative writing retreat.
Every part of the experience is carefully considered, from the accommodation to the daily programme. My aim is to create an environment where writers feel comfortable sharing their work, exploring new ideas and encouraging one another along the way.
Before long, conversations begin to flow, ideas emerge and writers start trusting their own voices. Seeing that confidence grow remains one of the most rewarding parts of every retreat.
Learning from Those Who Have Walked the Journey
To help shape the programme, I partnered with an experienced creative writing tutor who leads engaging workshops covering storytelling techniques, writing prompts and thoughtful feedback.
I also invite published authors to join us as guest speakers. Each writer is chosen with care, reflecting the interests and writing ambitions of those attending the retreat. Whether someone is working on a memoir, a novel or personal essays, hearing about another author’s journey often brings fresh perspective and renewed encouragement.
The programme balances workshops and discussions with time to write, reflect and absorb everything we’ve explored together. Giving ideas room to develop is just as valuable as learning new techniques.
Confidence Grows One Page at a Time
One of the things I enjoy most about hosting these retreats is watching writers discover abilities they had yet to recognise in themselves.
One guest kindly shared:
“Having attended one of her memoir writing workshops, I can’t recommend Wendy Ridolini highly enough. She is an exceptional host… I left the workshop on a high, eager to continue with my work.”
Another reflected on the experience by saying:
“I’ve never thought of myself as a writer, but this retreat gave me insight into my strengths as one and the encouragement I received spurred me to write a children’s book and a nearly completed memoir.”
Reading words like these reminds me why I first created the retreat. Every participant arrives with their own goals and ideas, and it is a privilege to watch those ideas take shape over the course of our time together.
Time to Write, Reflect and Connect
Alongside seminars, workshops and individual tutorials, there is plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings, gather inspiration and allow new ideas to settle naturally.
Some of the most memorable moments happen away from the classroom. A walk through one of Abruzzo’s historic villages, a shared meal overlooking the countryside or a quiet afternoon with a notebook often becomes the starting point for a new chapter or a fresh creative direction.
The friendships that grow throughout the retreat are equally meaningful. Spending time with people who share a love of writing creates connections that often continue long after everyone has returned home.
An Invitation to Begin Your Next Chapter
Every retreat reminds me that writing is a journey best shared with others. While each of us brings our own experiences to the page, learning together creates encouragement that lasts well beyond our time in Abruzzo.
If you’ve been looking for the opportunity to return to a manuscript, begin a new writing project or simply spend time writing in one of Italy’s most beautiful regions, I would be delighted to welcome you. Together we’ll explore ideas, learn from experienced authors and celebrate the joy of storytelling surrounded by the beauty of Abruzzo.
